Art on Wheels

Hello! I hope everyone had a great summer and are ready to come back for the new school year. Meet the teacher night will be held August 17 from 6 to 7 pm.

There have been a lot of changes at Fountaindale this year, one of which is the art room is temporarily going to be a third grade classroom. I will be operating from a cart and bring art to students in their homeroom classes. We hope that this will only be for a short time.

I will be posting my new schedule and important art dates, as soon as I receive the information.

See you soon!

A Year for Clay!

This has been the first year we have had our kiln up and running for the entire year. So far, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders have all had the opportunity to work with earth clay. Third grade just finished creating fish sculptures and 5th is currently working on coil animals.

Coming soon completed animals and fish pics!

Why do we use the elements of art?

We use the elements of art because they are the basic building blocks artists use when creating a work of art: line, shape, color, texture, value, form, and space.

Artists do not use all seven elements in each work, but there are always at least two working together to create the artwork.  Here are a few examples…

  1. We have to use a line when drawing the shapes we need to create images.
  2. When working with color we consider different darks and lights or values, to help us make creative decisions.
  3. We use three-dimensional forms and consider space when we are planning and using materials to make sculptures.

Students in grades k-5 have been working with various art elements since the first day of school. Take a look at some of the artwork we have created so far this year!

All visitors, if you are interested in learning more about the elements of art, visit The Artist’s Toolkit located under teacher links to the right of this post.

Remember, the art elements are tools we can use to help us become better artists, so have fun with them!

Oops!

Hello everyone! I am sorry I haven’t updated my blog. :( Unfortunately, until recently I have had difficulties with the host.

Fortunately things are up and running again as we move into the holiday season!

Stay tuned for what is happening in the art room and many pics of the fabulous artwork we have been creating!

It’s Almost Time!

The first day of school is just around the corner! I will be busy over the next two weeks setting up the art room and unpacking fresh materials. Here is a preview of what we will be learning to start off the new school year…..

In the beginning we always start with a review of the basics: line, shape, color, texture, value, form, and space.

Kindergarten and 1st Grade- Lines Alive! We spend the first few weeks drawing, cutting, and gluing lines. We learn how lines are the most basic and important element of art because without them we would not have any shapes, letters, or numbers

2nd Grade- We will begin with line, color and a unit on one of my favorite artists Keith Haring.

3rd, 4th, and 5th Grades- We will be working on creative name designs to begin the new year. Each grade will have a different name design project to help them review the art elements before learning new concepts.

We also review art room procedures and behavior expectations, which I will post in more detail after the year begins.

I can not wait to get started!
